The town of Adelaide in the Eastern Cape has recently suffered loss due to extreme drought. Ashraful Aid responded to Councillor Ernie Lombard’s appeal for any assistance in helping quench the needs of the community and their livestock.
The dam can be seen as a far stretch of barren land and does not resemble in the slightest, that a body of water once stood there. The Ashraful Aid team were shocked to see cattle laying lifeless and starved on the ground.
Councilor Lombard expressed how desperate the situation was before the Ashraful Aid team arrived. “Unless we get a proper downpour of rain, there is no hope of filling the dam…without assistance and help from people like you, I honestly don’t know what would have happened.” Infrastructure and poor maintenance, also meant that existing pump systems were simply not functioning.
The team were dispatched and begun to distribute water to residents with help from the local municipality. Ashraful Aid successfully distributed four thousand-5 litre bottles to the community. No person or animal should be without water. The town has also lost cattle, who in their desperation, also entered towns in the hope of getting something to eat or drink.
More help is needed, as farmers are running out of their reserves of water. Many residents depend on their land to feed their families. Living off the land now seems like a distant possibility without more help.
