What is the meaning of WAQF

Waqf is an Islamic legal term that refers to an endowment made by a Muslim individual, typically involving the donation of property or assets for charitable or religious purposes.

How does WAQF benefit a donor?

The investment is held in perpetuity for the benefit of the community or a specific group, and the profits from the asset are used for designated purposes such as supporting mosques, schools, hospitals, or other charitable causes without impacting the investment.

For the donor, this serves as a means of giving for eternity as this type of charity acts as a form of Sadaqah Jariyah – the act of voluntarily making a long-term charitable contribution that will continue to benefit others

How does WAQF donations work

  1. Donations in form of cash are invested into shariah compliant investments.
  2. returns from the investment are reinvested for a fixed term period to grow fund.
  3. Profits generated from the investment are then spent on funding long term projects for the following year.

The key characteristics of waqf include:

  • Perpetuity: Once the endowment is made, the property remains as waqf indefinitely and cannot be sold, inherited, or transferred.
  • Irrevocability: Once the endowment is made, it cannot be taken back or altered.
  • Charitable Purpose: The proceeds from the waqf must be used for charitable, religious, or public welfare purposes.

Waqf has a long history in Islamic societies and has been used to fund various community services and infrastructure projects. It remains an important aspect of Islamic philanthropy today. Your contribution, no matter how big or small, ignites a ripple effect of compassion and kindness.
