Fasts missed or broken during the month of Ramadan compels muslims to repay the fast by fasting for the day missed or fasting for 2 consecutive lunar months for broken fasts, however if it impossible to do this (mainly due to health reasons) then a charitable form of compensation can be made.
This is called Fidya (Fidyah) and is paid for fasts missed out of necessity, that cannot be made up afterwards.
The Fidyah amount required to be paid for one missed fast is R28 per day (Shaf’i, Hanbali and Maliki). Hanafi is R35 per day.
